Titin. Schematic illustration of titin in the passive state of a half-sarcomere, assuming no cross-bridge connections between actin and myosin. For these idealized conditions, titin filaments can be considered mechanically in series with the myosin filament, while in the active state, with cross-bridge formation between actin and myosin, titin filaments are not in series with the myosin filament, but behave like a parallel element to the cross-bridges; that is, titin forces add algebraically to the cross-bridge forces to give the entire force in an isolated half-sarcomere
